This summer, Peterborough GreenUP installed its first Depave Paradise project in Lakefield, Ontario in partnership with Winfield Shores Harbour, and the Township of Selwyn. This is the latest in a string of nearly 10 depave sites for Peterborough GreenUp, but the very first outside of the city of Peterborough. This new site is located at the entrance to Winfield Shores Harbour; a waterfront that connects to the headwaters of the Otonabee River.
On July 7th, 100m2 of asphalt was removed by hand, and transformed into Selwyn’s newest community greenspace! Eighteen committed community volunteers worked to help lift and remove the asphalt, liberating the soil, and installing a beautiful pollinator garden in its place. The Winfield shores pocket park will connect local trails and parks, and make the harbourfront more publicly accessible to all.
Because of its location, the Winfield Shores Pocket Park will also divert approximately 75,000 litres of rainwater from the stormwater system each year, and approximately 10 KG of pollutants from entering the Otonabee River. The planting includes 3 trees, 6 shrubs, and 125 other native wildflowers, herbs, and grasses. These pollinator-friendly gardens will support local birds and bees, and provide a beautiful community space for many to enjoy — all while protecting local water quality! Way to go GreenUp!
